North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS)
Post the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the statistical agencies of Canada, United States and Mexico determined there was a need for standardization of industry classification data for comparison purposes. To that end, a new industrial classification system was developed.
What is NAICS?
First introduced in 1997, NAICS (rhymes with Jakes) is a comprehensive system encompassing all economic activities. In other words, it allows all companies to be classified according to its business.
It has a hierarchical structure and at the highest level, divides the economy into 20 sectors. This structure is composed of sectors (two-digit codes), subsectors (three-digit codes), industry groups (four-digit codes), and industries (five-digit codes). The final level consists of six-digit codes which are used to designate nation-specific industries.
Scott’s Directories chose to make the transition to NAICS early in the process. The Canadian version of SIC codes had not been updated since 1980 and industries continued to evolve, particularly in the areas of science and technology. Certain industries were just not covered by SICs.
In addition, using NAICS codes would allow us and our clients to apply Statistics Canada industry data for analysis purposes.
Most importantly, there was and is a commitment to update this classification system more often than once a decade. Updates have been applied in 2002, 2007 and another is planned for 2012.
In the NAICS 2007 revision, major changes have been applied to:
- Wholesale Agents and Broker – All categories of wholesale agents and brokers are consolidated into 419120 Wholesale Trade Agents and Brokers.
- Real Estate Agents and Brokers (531210) split into 531211 - Real Estate Agents and 531212 - Offices of Real Estate Brokers.
- Split of Internet Service Providers (518111) into Wired Telecommunications Carriers (except Cable ) (517111), Cable and Other Program Distribution (517112), and Other Telecommunications (517910).
- Creation of Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals (519130) by combining Internet Publishing and Broadcasting (516110) and Web Search Portals (518112).
